The Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo are located in the northern part of Rwanda, just outside the town of Musanze. These picturesque lakes are surrounded by steep hills, tall waterfalls, and the breathtaking backdrop of the nearby Virunga Volcanoes, making them a must-see destination for nature lovers and photographers. A canoe boat trip or a boat ride on the Twin Lakes offers a perfect opportunity for sightseeing, birdwatching in Rwanda, and enjoying the tranquility of this stunning landscape.
The lakes were formed through volcanic activity in Rwanda’s northern region. In the past, the Nyabarongo River, the largest river in Rwanda, flowed northward toward Ndorwa (which currently belongs to Uganda). However, a volcanic eruption in the Muhabura volcano (now considered dormant) caused lava flows to block the river’s channel. This lava damming led to the formation of the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, which are also referred to as “lava dammed lakes.” The volcanic eruption diverted the Nyabarongo River southward, where it later joined the Akanyaru River to form the Akagera River.

As you pass along the Northern Province to reach Ruhondo lake, you will enjoy the revitalizing views and landscapes of the Country of a Thousand Hills. When the sky is clear, enjoy lunch with the view of Muhabura volcano. Head back to Kigali via the Northern province’s Musanze town.
- 06h30 – 07h00: Pick-up and leave Kigali by Universal ventures Rwanda Tours guide to drive 3 hours approx.
- 10h30-12h30: Reaching Ruhondo lake, a boat will take you for a water trip around in the lake.
- 12h30-14h30: Back from the boat trip, enjoy a waterside lunch at My Hill Eco lodge in Ruhondo.
Head back to Kigali via Musanze town
- 14h30-18h00: Drive back to Kigali city.
- Along the way in Musanze: Stop-over at Migano Cafefor leg stretching and a cup of coffee (or another drink).
