Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Kigali to Akagera National Park. Explore the park’s savannahs, wetlands, lakes, and woodlands on a game drive, searching for giraffes, zebras, elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, lions, and other wildlife.

In the evening, enjoy a sunset boat cruise on Lake Ihema, where you can spot hippos, crocodiles, African fish eagles, and many other bird species while enjoying the beautiful sunset.

On Day Two, enjoy a longer game drive from southern Akagera toward the northern plains, giving you another opportunity to spot the Big Five and other wildlife. After the safari, exit the park and drive back to Kigali for drop-off.

Itinerary of 2 Days Akagera National Park

Day 1: Transfer to Akagera National Park from Kigali. Travel time: ~2.5 hrs

After a relaxed breakfast at your hotel, your safari guide will pick you up at 9:00 am for the scenic drive to Akagera National Park. The journey takes approximately 2.5 hours, with a mid-way stop at the Imigongo Art Center to stretch your legs, use the facilities, and pick up your packed lunch.

Upon arrival at Akagera National Park, we will proceed to check into your accommodation and prepare for the afternoon activities, which include a half-day game drive and a sunset boat ride.

Start with a short game drive in Akagera National Park, spotting some of the park’s wildlife. In the late afternoon, enjoy a sunset boat ride on Lake Ihema, offering a unique chance to view hippos, crocodiles, and water buffaloes along the shores. You may also catch a glimpse of elephants wallowing in the water banks. The serene sunset and abundant wildlife make this boat ride an unforgettable experience.

After the boat ride, return to the lodge for dinner and an evening stay.
Accommodation options: Ruzizi Tented Camp (luxury lodge) or Akagera Game Lodge (mid-range lodge).

Day 2: Full Game Drive and Transfer back to Kigali

After an early breakfast at 7:00 am, leave for a morning game drive in Akagera National Park, ensuring you catch the early risers and late hunters. The park is home to big mammals like elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, and several species of antelope. Recently, lions and rhinos have been reintroduced to the park, and you’ll have a chance to spot them during your drive.

Akagera’s diverse habitats make it a haven for wildlife, and with over 500 bird species, it is also a birdwatcher’s paradise. Depending on your interests, spend 5-6 hours exploring the park and discovering even more wildlife.

In the late afternoon, drive back to Kigali, where you’ll arrive in the evening for drop-off at your hotel or the airport.
